Quirky Comedy Takes The St. Pete High Stage

This November, St. Pete High presents The Red Velvet Cake War. The play features the Verdeen cousins — the eccentric Gaynelle, the sassy and fun Peaches, and the unibrow sporting Jimmie Wyvette — as they attempt to hold a family reunion in the small town of Sweetgum, Texas. Other characters include the sharp-tongued Aunt LaMerle, good-natured Aubrey Verdeen, stylish TV host Cee Cee Windham, the one-eyed Newt Baylock, and European psychologist Elsa Dowdall.

image1This terribly timed reunion takes place when Gaynelle Verdeen is near a spectacular meltdown after “accidentally” driving through her husband’s girlfriend’s bedroom wall. After many hilarious twists and turns, a high-stakes wager is made on who bakes the best red velvet cake. The odd characters of The Red Velvet Cake War pull the audience through a gathering amusing and entertaining enough to cause jealousy in anyone that suffers during dull, melodramatic family reunions. Come watch this comedy to enjoy the best of crazy families and everything southern!

The talented student cast, lead by theatre director Trish Grunz and student director Trey Bailey, includes: Elizabeth Vrable as Gaynell, Sabrina Wassmer as Peaches, Vanessa Reyes as Jimmie Wyvette, Julia Linkogle as Aunt LaMerle, Trey Bailey doubling as character Aubrey Verdeen, Angela Lynch as Cee Cee Windham, Jeremy Padin as Newt Baylock, and Dominika Dzurny as Elsa Dowdall.

The school’s Thespian Troupe #2559 performs this “riotously funny Southern-fried comedy” in the historic auditorium, fitting for a school well-known for its rich history. This history is reflected in the vibrant spirit of the school, especially in its drama department. These young actors brilliantly meet the challenge of playing hilariously quirky, elderly Texans. Students also participate in making the auditorium stage shine through a multitude of crews, such as the jobs of the tech directors (Zak McAlduff and James Macentee) that transform the stage into a Victorian home. The event is a true example of the school’s talent and charm.

Come to the St. Petersburg High School Auditorium Theater, Nov. 9 through Nov. 11 at 7pm, to enjoy this amazing show! Tickets cost $8 for students and $12 for adults. Handicapped and Preferred seating are available. Concessions sales and ticket sales fund these productions.

Support of the theatre department and its shows from the St. Petersburg community are greatly appreciated!

St. Petersburg High School is located at 2501 5th Ave. N., St. Petersburg, 33713.
