SUMMARY:Your Real Stories presents "Love Is Like" Workshop
DESCRIPTION:To celebrate the festival theme of Love & Relationships\, Marquese McFerguson (PhD Candidate at USF Tampa’s Department of Communication) will be leading a workshop entitled Love is Like…: Reimagining the Stories We Write about our Relationships. \nStevie Wonder and Bill Withers are two of the most prolific and renowned singers/songwriters of the twentieth century. Both composed timeless songs that explore the topic of love from various perspectives and create musical narratives that resonate with people from different cultures. In this storytelling workshop\, we creatively follow in the footsteps of these musical icons as we rethink the ways we can create poetry about the often talked about topic of love. \nTickets are $15. Registration begins at 4:30pm. Event starts at 5:00pm in the Multipurpose Room. \n

SUMMARY:Kenwood Public Art launch event at Woodfield Fine Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:WOODFIELD FINE ART TO FEATURE NEW PUBLIC ART AT OCT 12TH 2ND SATURDAY ART WALK\nThis will not be your typical art show…but it is guaranteed to delight! On the night of the October 12 Second Saturday Art Walk\, Woodfield Fine Art Gallery (2253 Central Ave.) will feature the first group of 16 finials – distinctive and unusual ornaments – that will soon top signposts in Historic Kenwood. The show is open to the public from 5:00 to 9:00 pm without charge. Refreshments will be served.\nAll created by members of the Artist Enclave of Historic Kenwood\, this first group of finials includes paintings and photographs printed on durable aluminum\, stained glass\, a kinetic avocado\, a free-form piano sculpture\, a colorful pot of paint brushes\, a playful “reconstruction” sculpture\, and more.\nPaul Barrera’s finials are prints of three subjects found in the immediate environs\, including a parrot. Graphic designer Mike Toth created his avocado as a nod to the origins of the Historic Kenwood neighborhood as an avocado grove. A playful sculpture of found objects called “Home” created by sculptor Sallie Hackett Brown incorporates a red “egg” with bold aluminum salad server hands\, and letters reading “Home” and “Love.”\nOther artists whose work will grace signposts are stained glass artist Mike Baker\, photographer Rich Pollin\, multi-artist Janna Kennedy Hyten\, musician William Bryant\, and painters YaeL Kelley and Dwayne Shepherd.\nHISTORIC KENWOOD’S PUBLIC ART INITIATIVE AND ARTIST ENCLAVE\nThe featured finials are the second public art initiative undertaken by this “Neighborhood of the Arts.” In the first\, seven drab park benches were transformed into works of art in 2017. The finial project will ultimately place creative toppings on all 125 signposts throughout the neighborhood. A third initiative will place banners featuring images of art by Historic Kenwood artists along First Avenue North. A fourth\, still under development\, will create neighborhood markers – substantial pedestals built by volunteers and topped with unique pieces of local art.\nAll artists who created finials are members of the Artist Enclave of Historic Kenwood (AEHK). Formed in 2014 when the city created a zoning overlay district to enable artists to work\, teach\, and sell from their homes\, AEHK now boasts some 70 member artists.\nThe public art initiative was conceived and continues to be developed by a committee of volunteers from the ever-inventive Historic Kenwood Neighborhood Association.\nWOODFIELD FINE ART GALLERY\nWoodfield Fine Art Gallery\, established in 2015\, showcases only the original art of Tampa Bay area artists\, where art enthusiasts can view and buy art that is not mass produced or tagged as collectible just because it has a number. The Gallery carries the works of both emerging as well as nationally renowned award-winning artists. Most art media are represented. Paintings in oil\, acrylic\, watercolor\, and mixed media combine with photography\, sculpture\, ceramics\, and glass works to provide a complete gallery experience.\nFurther information is available at historickenwood.org and on the Facebook pages of Historic Kenwood and Woodfield Fine Art Gallery. \n

SUMMARY:Day of Reparations to African People - St. Petersburg\, FL 2019
DESCRIPTION:Akwaaba Hall at the Uhuru House\, 1245 18th Avenue South\, St. Petersburg\, FL\, 33705\n More Information\nWhat: Day of Reparations to African People: “Reparations – A Revolutionary Demand!”\nWhen: Saturday\, October 12\, 2019 at 6:30 PM – 9 PM \nWhere: Akwaaba Hall 1245 18th Ave S\, Saint Petersburg\, Florida 33705 \nContact: stpete@uhurusolidarity.org \nThe St. Petersburg branch of the Uhuru Solidarity Movement will host “Reparations – A Revolutionary Demand!” as part of the 2019 Days of Reparations to African People Speaking Tour and organizing campaign. This tour reflects a critical turning point in the six hundred year long history of oppression and resistance of African people in the U.S. and around the world.\nThe Uhuru Solidarity Movement (USM) was founded by and works under the leadership of the African People’s Socialist Party (APSP) with the goal of building a movement of white reparations to African people in solidarity with the liberation of Africa and African people everywhere. \nKeynote speaker Chairman Omali Yeshitela of the African People’s Socialist Party\, author of the theory of African Internationalism\, will discuss the foundation of capitalism and U.S. and European wealth and power on the European assault on Africa\, centuries of enslavement of African people\, along with the genocide of the Indigenous people\, the theft of their land and the colonization of the majority of humanity. \nChairwoman Penny Hess of the African People’s Solidarity Committee will discuss why reparations to African people is the most positive and progressive stand that white people can take and how we can participate! \nSays Penny Hess: “At a time when one in three African men will be sent to prison and death by police violence is the greatest cause of death for young black men\, the Days of Reparations to African People calls on white people everywhere to break from our continuum of complicity with the oppression of African people and stand in solidarity with the African community fighting for power over their lives and destinies!” \nCultural presentation \nLight refreshments will be served.\nTo register https://stpetedayofreparations2019.eventbrite.com stpete@uhurusolidarity.org \n

SUMMARY:Wags and Whiskers: The Great Catsby
DESCRIPTION:Wags & Whiskers: The Great Catsby is right around the corner! Join us on October 12th for a glamorous evening filled with 1920’s glam and entertainment at the St. Petersburg Woman’s Club. \nWags and Whiskers is our largest fundraiser of the year and is vital to our organization. This year’s gala will provide much-needed support for the Friends of Strays medical fund. Each year\, we administer veterinary care to well over 1\,000 animals\, providing them with spay/neuter surgeries\, vaccinations\, microchip implants\, and any injury/illness treatment that may arise during their temporary time with us. We spend upwards of $80\,000 annually on medical care for our cats and dogs and Wags & Whiskers is critical in our ability to do so. \nHeavy hors d’oeuvres\, including a roast beef carving station and pasta bar\, will be catered by Amici’s and attendees will have access to an open bar with a signature cocktail from Kozuba. The evening will be emceed by News Channel 8’s very own Meredyth Censullo and will feature a program highlighting our life-saving work at the shelter. \nTickets are $75 for general admission and $100 for reserved seating. We hope to see you there! \n

SUMMARY:Memory Café
DESCRIPTION:St. Pete Memory Café at Carrabba’s\, 1951 4 th St. N. @ Sunken Gardens @ 11:00am and every 2nd Monday same place and time. \nAre you traveling along the dementia highway? The roadways are crowded. None of the maps show what exit to take to find one of the best rest stops around. Here’s a tip. Look for the sign that says\, “Memory Cafe Next Exit”. \nRest is needed on every journey. More and more people are discovering that stopping at a Memory Cafe is like finding an oasis in the desert. A Memory Café experience brightens and refreshes and makes you say\, “Ahhhh…this is just what I needed”. \nYou’re invited to join us if you or a loved one you care for at home have memory issues due to a disease process or traumatic brain injury\, and you want to continue actively enjoying life. \nLocal Memory Cafe events with Cate and Jane open doors to new friendships\, and provide additional support during challenging times. They understand dementia professionally and through personal family experiences. A combined 70+ years of experience allows them to share two unique perspectives. They jazz up daily routines\, and offer stimulating thought and conversations. Resource information is shared\, laughing is common\, and good stories abound. Surround yourself with understanding others on their own dementia journeys. \nHighway rest areas are free\, and so are Memory Café events. Better yet\, if you’re hungry\, there are no vending machines. Fresh food & beverages are available for purchase. Simplified menus are used to make restaurant ordering a breeze. \n

SUMMARY:Tampa Bay Latin Film Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Tampa Bay Latin Film Festival located in St. Petersburg\, Florida\, explores Latin America’s extraordinary emerging and established talent in film by bringing feature\, documentary and short Latin American films to the Tampa Bay community. \nThe Festival hopes to answer the questions: What is happening in Latin American film? Who are the emerging filmmakers from that region and what inspires them? Our mission also includes spotlighting the work of Latin American filmmakers in the United States. By providing more outlets for these extraordinary voices in film not typically seen in commercial theaters\, we will explore the incredibly diverse perspectives that Latin America has to offer the world. Through this process\, national boundaries\, boundaries between self and other begin to dissolve as we explore universal themes that unite us all. Hopefully this Festival will further a dialogue that will create greater understanding and empathy for others. \n

SUMMARY:American Racism and the Holocaust\, featuring Lawrence N. Powell
DESCRIPTION:Lawrence Powell traces the family’s dramatic odyssey and explores the events that eventually triggered Anne Skorecki Levy’s brave decision to honor the suffering of the past by confronting the recurring specter of racist hatred. \nThe first book to connect the prewar and wartime experiences of Jewish survivors to the lives they subsequently made for themselves in the United States\, Troubled Memory: Anne Levy\, the Holocaust\, and David Duke’s Louisiana is also a dramatic testament to how the experiences of survivors as new Americans spurred their willingness to bear witness. This powerful work tells the story of the Holocaust Survivor who transformed the horrors of her childhood into a passionate mission to defeat the political menace of reputed neo-Nazi and Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke. \nPerhaps the only family to survive the liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto as a group\, the Skoreckis evaded deportation to Treblinka\, by posing as Aryans and ultimately made their way to New Orleans\, where they became part of a vibrant Jewish community. Breaking decades of silence\, she played a direct role in the unmasking and defeat of Duke during his 1991 campaign for the governorship of Louisiana. \nJoin us to hear Lawrence N. Powell\, Professor Emeritus\, Department of History\, Tulane University\, share insights from his book Troubled Memory: Anne Levy\, the Holocaust\, and David Duke’s Louisiana. \nA book signing to follow. \nThis program is free and open to the public. Seating is limited! To reserve your seat\, please call 727.820.0100\, extension 301. \n
