An African Proverb tells us “the best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is now”. Folks who love trees planted many historic and legendary trees around St. Petersburg throughout the last century. The St. Petersburg Sustainability Council has published the Legendary Trees of St. Petersburg Calendar for 2017. This Calendar showcases the spectacular photographs and legends of the some of the most historic, beautiful, and important trees across the City of St. Petersburg. The Council put out a call for submissions of our storied trees, which came in from all parts of the city. We partnered with the Morean Arts Center’s Beth Reynolds and her Photography Club. Her students photographed most of the images used for the calendar, emphasizing the special and varied light at play in trunks and leaves.

St. Pete’s art, culture and innovation culminated in the first annual Et Cultura, a five-day long festival hosting locally sourced creators and performers. From November 16-20, guests could experience the heart of our city for a $25 all-access pass, earning them entrance to premiere films and live music. The crossplatform, multi-day event offered something for everyone: a weekend of continuous concerts, plenty of compelling visual art from every medium, and a 180-plus booth indie market with vendors of every specialty.

In St. Petersburg’s short 128 years, acres of scrub land have been thoughtfully developed into a beautiful little city where people come to enjoy life, which was the plan all along. Emily Elwyn, president of the board of St. Petersburg Preservation, architectural historian and tour guide extraordinaire, explained this to our tour group last month as we took the organization’s Original Downtown Historic Walking Tour.
